Memorial sites in the Shire of Northam

Centenary Hill View Reserve and Obelisk - Junction of Southern Brook Rd & Habgood Rd, Southern Brook.  This obelisk is dedicated to the pioneers of the Wheatbelt by Sir William Campion in 1929, the centenary year of the British colonisation of Western Australia in 1829.

Arvo Anson Memorial for crash site -  Avro Anson Rd, Mokine.From Spencers Brook Road turn into Leeder Road, left into Tighe road, this leads to Avro Anson Rd. This memorial was erected in memory of the members of the RAAF who lost their lives when their Avro Anson plane crashed near this site on 9th October 1942.

Clackline Memorial - Great Eastern Hwy & Spencers Brook Rd, Clackline. This memorial was erected in 1929 by the pupils of Clackline School to commemorate the centenary year of the British colonisation of Western Australia in 1829.

John Morrell Gravesite Memorial - Goomalling Rd, corner of Gillett Rd, Northam.     

The memorial reads: "Sacred to the memorial of John Morrell died 18th October 1843 aged 63 years."

John Morrell was one of the first European settlers in Northam and was known as the pioneer of Northam.  He reportedly caught a chill and died shortly after jumping into Northam Pool to rescue an employee who had fallen in whilst washing sheep.  Garden, D 1992, Northam - An Avon Valley History, Hesperian Press and Northam Shire Council.

Chidlow/Jones Gravesite - Gillett Rd, Northam.        
Situated further East on Gillett Road from John Morrell's grave.
The memorial reads: "Sacred to the memory of Peter Chidlow aged 35 years and Edward Jones aged 30 years who were killed by natives 15th June 1837"

St James Church Memorial - Katrine Rd, Northam.     
Situated on the north side of hill between Moore Street and Irishtown Road. There is a track leading up to site. The Foundation Stone for St James Anglican Church was laid on Katrine Road in 1861 when it was thought that the town of Northam would develop nearby.

Five Premiers Memorial - Grey St, corner Minson Ave, Northam.   
Situated outside the Northam Visitor Centre, this memorial was erected in honour of five previous Premiers of Western Australia and brief information about each premier is on the memorial.

May Reserve Fountain -  May St, corner Chidlow St, Northam.       
Situated on May Reserve, this fountain was given by the Hon.George Throssell C.M.G. and his wife to the people of Northam. 

Original Northam Cemetery Plaque - Chidlow St, corner Burgoyne St, Northam. Situated in front of the Killara Centre, the plaque was donated by Purslowe Funeral Homes and erected by the Northam and Districts Historical Society.  It marks the approximate site of the original Northam Cemetery.

Old Girls School Plaque -  Wellington St, Northam.
Situated in front of the Old Girls School on Wellington St next door to Avon Valley Arts.

Hugo Throssell V.C. Memorial - Fitzgerald St, Northam.
Situated in front of the Fitzgerald's Hotel near the fountain in the Avon Mall. This memorial is in recognition of Second-Lieutenant Hugo Vivian Hope Throssell, 10th Light Horse Regiment, Australian Imperial Force, Victoria Cross recipient.

Northam War Memorial - Fitzgerald St, Northam.
Situated next to the Memorial Hall on Fitzgerald St near the corner of Beavis Place.

Railway Roll of Honour -  Fitzgerald St, Northam.
The Eastern District Railway Honour Board is located in an alcove at the front of the Memorial Hall, Fitzgerald St.

Sisters of St Joseph Centenary Plaque -  Wellington St, Northam.
Situated on the entrance path to the former convent at St Joseph's School Senior Campus. This plaque commemorates the Centenary of the arrival in Northam of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition on the first of May, 1889.
